This Week's Green Home Special: |

|
An "April Fool" was somebody who wasn't aware that the pagan tradition of worshiping Spring and celebrating the new year on April 1st had been supplanted by the Christian New Years of January 1st.
This nifty little compost carrier is made from recycled plastic (~50%) making it super green! The closed sided bin has a snap shut lid with a floral design cutout on the top to provide aeration. Underneath the lid is a space for the carbon filter, which helps eliminate any and all composting odors. Purchase both the compost carrier and 3 carbon filters for $23 (originally $29). Being only 2.4 gallons, this is the perfect carrier for short-term storage of your kitchen compost and will give you a jump start on the composting process. It is easy to collect kitchen scraps without interrupting your vegetable chopping and makes for a quick and convenient clean up after dinner. When the carrier is full, simply transfer the contents to either a heap in your yard, or directly into your recycled plastic yard composter. Green Home recommends using the yard composter, as opposed to creating loose heaps in your yard, for it creates the ideal environment for aerobic decomposition to occur more completely and rapidly, while providing your garden a tidy, sanitary spot for any yard or kitchen waste. Composting of organic matter in landfills is a principal cause of the greenhouse gas methane, making reducing organic waste in landfills a key element in the fight against climate change. Be an April Fool, and start composting today!
